Josh Speidel's parents never wanted him to give up. Their son never did.
Speidel was injured in a car accident in high school that resulted in a traumatic brain injury after committing to Vermont in 2015. Despite the devastating injury, his dream to play in a Division I college basketball game didn't fade away.. During the team's senior night, UVM allowed Albany the first basket.
In return, the opposing team stood by, allowing for a pass to go to Speidel and for the 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward to lay the ball into the hoop to score the first points of his college career. "I didn't get to experience my senior night in high school, I didn't get to walk out with my parents," Speidel said before the game."I don’t think it’s hit me fully yet, but just being able to walk them out and embrace them and thank , thank coach for all he’s done — it will be pretty emotional. It’s hard to put into words."
