Harris County boosts sheriff, district attorney funding to maintain staffing levels

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, left, and Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia listen as Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis, right, speaks during the Harris County Commissioners Court Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2022, in Houston. Republican Commissioners Jack Cagle of Precinct 4 and Tom Ramsey of Precinct 3 did not attend the Commissioners Court.

Unlike a department headed by an appointed official, the district attorney's office is run by an elected official with independent oversight of her office. Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey and former Precinct 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle skipped six court meetings to deny the quorum, citing inflation as a reason to set a lower tax rate, while also calling for budget increases for law enforcement. Democrats argued the GOP strategy accomplished the opposite by eliminating some $100 million in planned increases for law enforcement.
