Vice President Kamala Harris has cast more tie-breaking votes than all but two predecessors. It’s starting to frustrate some staff.
When Vice President Harris votes, it’s important to the administration. It means that whenever there’s a tie, they win.And yet, the need to stick around Washington has not always been cause for enthusiastic celebration. Multiple officials described to POLITICO the coordination with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s team over her schedule as a “give and take.”
“She’s able to get intel and bring it back to the White House. She’s able to carry messages both ways. It gets her into the flow with a 50-50 Senate,” said Herbie Ziskend, Harris’ senior adviser for communications. “When the vice president goes to the Hill for these major moments, it is a really big opportunity to lift up the administration’s message,” Ziskend said.
