Critics had been calling for change at the shelter since a dog named Pursuit was given a kill date despite being a volunteer favorite.
The embattled director of the Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area will be leaving the organization, the board of directors announced Wednesday.
That high-profile incident kicked off a campaign by some critics — including many former employees and volunteers — against Kaunas through a Facebook page called “In Pursuit of Change,” that has more than 3,300 followers. Kaunas’ departure also comes several months after she moved off the HSHA-owned farm in Perry County. The board had allowed Kaunas to live on the farm since its purchase in 2013, in exchange for care of the farm’s animals. Critics raised questions about the way she cared for the animals and the way a pig was euthanized.
A news release announcing Kaunas’ departure noted “her leadership during the pandemic helped continue our important mission even in the most difficult of times. We’re proud that while our intakes return to pre-pandemic levels, euthanasia dropped to its lowest rate in four years in 2022.”Groves said Aspasia Yeager, HSHA director of operations, will serve as interim executive director amid a nationwide search for Kaunas’ permanent replacement.
