The increase in deaths in 2020 and 2021 far exceeds deaths attributed to COVID
It’s been suggested by some that the government was exaggerating the number of deaths due to COVID-19. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, COVID deaths for 2020 and 2021 totaled 842,000, and with omicron the total has continued to climb in 2022.
A simple approach to addressing this question of whether the number of COVID deaths are under- or overstated is to look at the total number of “excess” deaths in 2020 and 2021, where excess deaths are simply the change in deaths over the previous year. The exception is our estimate for 2021; since deaths increased dramatically in 2020 due to COVID, 2021 excess deaths are calculated using 2019 as the comparison year.
