Heather McGhee traveled the country to see how Americans see themselves—and each other.

the former leader of progressive think tank Demos, and her 2021 best seller, you might know that the book takes a great interest in swimming pools. In McGhee’s telling, the fact that in the 1960s many communities decided to fill in their public swimming pools rather than integrate them is a reminder that racism sometimes makes people do illogical things. Ultimately, it’s a metaphor for the power of cross-racial solidarity—and what happens in its absence.

“Racism is a really tough subject that is probably the most loaded and complex subject that we try to tackle together,” she said in a recent video interview. “There’s something about the idea of a swimming pool that is so simple, joyful, accessible, everybody loves it, that the idea that a community would choose to take that away from themselves in the name of racism just feels both unbelievable and totally believable—because it did happen.

McGhee hopes the podcast will reach an even broader audience than the book, and that people will learn about the parts of the country they haven’t seen for themselves. “How do we actually figure out who we are as Americans and who are the other people who are in our democracy? Through screens, through the media, through representation,” she said. “Most people stay within 75 miles of where they were born. Our country is too big and too diverse for us to truly know who our fellow American is.
