NJ Advance Media visited four New Jersey grocery chains to compare prices from now to March 2019.

The pandemic and now other national and international events are driving up grocery prices.Grocery prices are up, no matter where you shop in New Jersey.

A year before the pandemic began, we did our own shopping experiment and compared prices at 4 chain grocery stores throughout the state. At the time, the 13 items on our list cost anywhere from about $34 at Aldi, to more than double that at Wegman’s. Surprisingly, some items decreased, which kept the bill fairly steady. Bran cereal was 20 cents less and a loaf of whole grain bread was half of what it was in 2019 at just 66 cents.Six of the 13 items increased in price — spring mix up 49 cents, eggs up 70 cents, margarine now 60 cents more, coffee up $1, tuna 30 cents more, and cheese 30 cents more.
