An estimated $71 million is supposed to arrive at San Diego County public schools this school year to pay for arts programs thanks to Proposition 28, a ballot initiative that voters statewide approved last year.
The proposition can potentially benefit elementary schools in particular, many of which have not had arts education for all grade levels unless the classroom teacher makes time for it on their own, Crooks said. Small San Diego County school districts are each expected to get as little as $10,000 while larger districts will each get a few million dollars, according to conservative estimates drawn up by the education firm School Services of California.
Only about five dozen, or half of the district’s elementary schools, will see an increase in arts instruction this school year, Sperling said; the rest of elementary schools will see the increase next school year. Elementary schools with the highest percentages of low-income students will get arts programs first, according to the district.
