Colorado Parks and Wildlife has finalized its plan to begin reintroducing wolves in the state by December 2023.
The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission has approved the state's final after being presented with a draft for reintroduction of the animals to Colorado's Western Slope by December 2023.
"If a licensed facility expresses interest and can demonstrate that they have the physical infrastructure and financial capacity to care for a wolf that is injured and deemed to not require humane euthanasia, this will be considered,” the plan reads.Originally, this section comprised four phases, the last of which weighed turning wolves into a game species that can be hunted., and that phase has now been replaced with one on “Long Term Wolf Management.
In a compromise, CPW added a geographical distribution component to transition from Phase Two, when wolves will be consideredin the state, to Phase Three, when wolves will become a non-game species. Changes in Chapter Five, “Wolf Management,” specify when state and federal agents can injure or kill wolves, clarify the scientific purposes that wolves can be taken for, and eliminate the phrase “to avoid conflict with human activities.”
