Less than 24 hours after an 18-year-old gunman, Salvador Ramos, entered Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and killed 21 people, including at least 19 children and two teachers, some of the victims have begun to be identified. Here's what we know:
An educator who devoted nearly two decades to teaching. A 10-year-old boy who was quick to crack a joke. A fourth-grader who was learning to play football with his grandfather.Mireles, a fourth-grade teacher at Robb Elementary School, has been identified as one of the victims by family members. Mireles was a teacher for 17 years and married to Ruben Ruiz, a police officer with the Uvalde school district. She also leaves behind a daughter and three pets.
“My daughter has Down syndrome, and she was one of the first students at that time to be included in a regular classroom,” Audrey Garcia told the Washington Post. “Ms. Mireles always went above and beyond. She never saw Gabby as having less potential than any of the other students.”Garcia, a fourth-grade teacher, was also killed, her son, Christian Garcia, confirmed to NBC. Garcia was an educator for 23 years and a co-teacher with Mireles.
"I love to BBQ with my husband, listen to music, and take country cruises to Concan," Garcia wrote on her teacher's introduction page.Lopez, a fourth-grader at Robb Elementary School, was among those killed, his mother, Felicha Martinez, told the outlet. Lopez, who was always cracking jokes with his family, had a penchant for dancing.We're learning more about the victims of the Uvalde school shooting, and 10-year-old Xavier's family shared this picture of him.
Martinez was at the school just hours prior to the deadly event to attend her son's honor roll ceremony.Flores, a fourth-grader at Robb Elementary School, was among those killed Tuesday, according to his uncle, Christopher Salazar. Flores"loved going to school" and"to laugh and have fun," Salazar told the outlet. He was an honor roll student."Thank you everyone for the prayers and help trying to find my baby. She’s been found.
“We started throwing the football together, and I was teaching him pass patterns. Such a fast little boy and he could catch a ball so good,” Renfro said.
