In a letter to BAMC, a nonprofit that pushes against animal cruelty urged the center to stop using live pigs to help teach medical trainees how to perform on humans.

A group of physicians is asking San Antonio's Brooke Army Medical Center to stop using live pigs during its medical training.A physicians group that advocates against animal cruelty is using billboards to call out San Antonio’sOn Interstate 35 near BAMC, two billboards depicting a pig with a helmet read, “Pigs make lousy soldiers: Stop using animals to train Army doctors.” A similar billboard is near San Pedro and Euclid Avenue.

In a letter to BAMC, several veterans with the medical group urged the medical center to stop its use of live pigs in its emergency medical skills course, which helps trainees learn how to perform on humans. The group said that out of the 285 emergency medicine programs in the U.S. and Canada that it surveyed, BAMC is one of seven that still use live animals during training.“We have served a cumulative 166 years in the U.S. military, and all of us have experienced firsthand the educational benefits of human-relevant methods and the shortcomings of animal-based medical training,” the letter's authors wrote.

In response to the group’s letter, BAMC said the U.S. Department of Defense is not required to phase out live animal use for medical education and training. Even so, BAMC said in a statement, the Department of Defense"is committed to reducing the use of live animals in medical education, and medical readiness training to the fullest extent possible. This includes replacing use of live animals with medical modeling and simulation whenever possible.”
