We speak to HighDesert director Jay Roach about the off-kilter comedy of the AppleTVPlus series as well as how he found the perfect cast to tell the story:
High Desert is a dark comedy series that tells the story of Peggy , who makes some life-altering decisions after losing her mother . She decides to become a private investigator and unexpectedly stumbles upon a major art scam. While her siblings try to bring her back down to Earth, Peggy digs her heels in and ends up creating more problems than she's able to solve.
Screen Rant spoke with High Desert director Jay Roach about the off-kilter comedy of this dark series, and why it works so well. He also discussed finding the right cast to fit the characters and how Peggy's dune buggy vehicle fits her perfectly. Rupert Friend as Guru Bob, the wannabe cult leader who could be dangerous or could be just full of crap. Matt Dillon coming in as her ex-husband who got her arrested years ago. She probably shouldn't be hanging out with him, but she's addicted to him. Those kinds of predicaments both connect to the emotion of what she's going through, but also are funny because they're there. They're good predicaments. They're engines for comedy.
