High school soccer coach uses empathy as the key to success | Opinion
Vincenzo Cox with members of the Alief Elsik High School soccer team. The Rams are mostly immigrant kids from Latin America and African countries, many of them English learners. Cox is a 2022 Texan of the Year finalist.The kids come from all over the world. Some are from El Salvador, Colombia or Mexico, others are from Nigeria, Congo or Senegal. Many are just learning English, but under coach Vincenzo Cox’s wing, they have a common language: soccer.
Cox understands where the boys come from, sometimes from unimaginable struggles. His empathy is a valuable asset. It allows him to build a foundation before turning the boys into competitive athletes, opening the door to them for a better life.“A lot of them are very guarded in the beginning. I have grown as a human being to understand it,” Cox told us. “I try to make sure they are welcomed, I check on them. When they are safe and comfortable I integrate them with more discipline and structure”.
But it was not that easy. In the beginning, the kids were actually disappointed. When they heard “Vincenzo” was the coach, they expected an Italian coach. Cox believes that being a Black coach is an advantage. Since there are very few Black Americans that opt for soccer in this Houston-area high school, the boys know he has no preferences. He will pick the best of them in a very competitive environment. About 25 of them make it to the varsity team in a school with 5,000 students.
