Repair work by Caltrans and its partners continues at the Rocky Creek slip-out that occurred March 30 on Highway 1 near Big Sur. Caltrans started working around the clock on the stabilization effort on its way to meeting its May 27 one-way reversing signal light reopening of the roadway there. Starting Monday, Caltrans will open the twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 through the Rocky Creek slip-out to the general public according to a press release from the organization.
The convoys will run from 7-8 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. each day. Highway 1 will continue to be closed at Rocky Creek the remainder of the day so crews can continue the repair work to stay on schedule to reopen the roadway by Memorial Day.Once Highway 1 stabilized at Rocky Creek, traffic can return to Big Sur

In the afternoon, the public will be able to use the northbound convoy to leave the area; however, only local residents, essential workers and drivers with existing travel reservations will be allowed to join the southbound convoy. There is no exit to the south.
Highway 1 has been closed at Rocky Creek since a portion of the southbound lane slid into ocean last month. Convoys have been running twice a day, weather permitting, for residents and essential workers since then. Since convoys need time to alternate the travel direction during the one-hour window, travelers are advised to arrive as early as possible.
