Super Bowl LVIII is finally upon us and after a grueling season, there are two teams left, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. From a team looking to make history to a team looking to end a near three-decade drought, here are five storylines surrounding this year’s game.

ADAM COLE The relationship between Clifford Story and Charles Kelly not only goes way back. It includes some especially unique layers.

“I called Kristian in,” Clifford recalled, “and I said, ‘Coach, you’re going to be back for this one right here.’” “You play for a guy, and then the guy coaches your son,” Clifford said. “You can just remember and reflect back on the kind of coach that he is and coach that he was when he coached us. It really made me know what Kristian was getting.”

The Opelika-Auburn News spoke to Story and four other area coaches about Kelly and what he brings the Tigers on the recruiting trail. Here’s what they had to say.Enterprise head coach Ben Blackmon: “The biggest thing is he’s honest and he builds a great relationship; stays in touch with folks and has a good relationship with the high school coaches. That’s what recruiting is. It’s about building relationships with kids and coaches in this process.

Former Carroll head coach and current Auburn High assist coach Patrick Plott: “He’s a guy that’s going to be upfront with you and truthful with you throughout the whole process. He recruited a kid I had at Ozark, at linebacker; came by to see him a couple of times. He was always upfront and truthful with the kids and talked about how they would be treated. And I could always tell those kids that he’s telling the truth, because I was a witness to that firsthand.

Lanett head coach Clifford Story: “Consistency is what made him so good. He was always consistent with what he said he was going to do, and he did it. And then also, he made it personable. Coach Kelly got to know your family. He not only wanted to know the player, but he wanted to know what all came with the player as far as siblings, other family members, what they did. He just built a family tree.

“ ... As a coach, you’ve got to be able to evaluate and know whether the kid can actually play or not. And then, if he can play, you’ve got to be able to recruit him to go out and convince him and get him to come play for you. “That’s probably one reason why he’s gotten so many good players, is he’s always putting the player first. And then once they get there, he’s developed them as a player and a person. He’s had a lot of success doing that at a lot of different places.”

Nix: “Very personable, very good, very open. Coach Davis, from the very first time he was hired, was one of the first schools that he came by before Cam became Cam, because we had already told him this is a special player. I think Coach Davis recognized he was a special player and just wanted to get in here and start building relationships.

“But I think a lot of that comes from his previous experience when he was at Ole Miss. They know how to recruit and how to get kids on campus and show them what Auburn’s about. And I think, a lot of times, once they get those kids there, then it’s not hard to sell them on wanting to be there.”
