Hoboken’s annual Italian Festival celebrating the Madonna Dei Martiri, or Madonna of the Martyrs, takes place from Thursday, Sept. 9, through Sunday, Sept. 10, along Sinatra Drive. The festival, which generally attracts thousands of visitors, celebrates the Madonna and emulates the same festival that has been celebrated in Molfetta, Italy, since 1399.The Hoboken Italian Festival, the Feast of the Madonna Dei Martiri, returns to the Mile Square City on Thursday, Sept.
The festival, which annually attracts thousands, is the city’s own version of an Italian tradition that is more than 600 years old. In 1399, Ladislao di Durazzo, the King of Napoli, ordered that a street festival and religious celebration were to take place to honor the “Miracle” and blessings of the Madonna.
