Homeland Security extends REAL ID deadline to 2025

The Department of Homeland Security on Monday announced that it will extend the REAL ID enforcement deadline to May 7, 2025.

PUBLISHED 11:25 AM EST Dec. 05, 2022for air travelers another two years, citing pandemic-related delays in states issuing the compliant licenses.

“DHS continues to work closely with U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories to meet REAL ID requirements,” Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement. “This extension will give states needed time to ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card. DHS will also use this time to implement innovations to make the process more efficient and accessible.

The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 and signed into law by then-President George W. Bush, was intended to go into effect in 2008. It has been delayed numerous times for several reasons. Monday's announcement was the third pandemic-related delay of the air travel component.
