Honey Dijon's sixth collection is a timely tribute to '80s New York subculture

on the fashion week front row—it was this conversation that galvanized her to finally propose launching her own brand.

“Within the last couple of years, we’ve seen this sort of transition of what a creative can be and a redefining of what a designer is,” says Dijon. “There are lots of people that have worked in fashion that weren’t technically fashion designers, but they were visionaries. There wasn’t really anyone talking about Black queer culture and the roots of Chicago house music in fashion, and I thought, well, I’ve lived all of this. It makes sense, then, that for her sixth collection—launched last week with a lookbook starring Dijon and a motley crew of New York night owls—Dijon looked to the restless creative spirit of Keith Haring. She collaborated with the late artist’s estate to feature an array of his drawings inspired by club culture across jumpsuits, denim jackets, and ponchos. “Keith would fly back every Sunday from wherever he was in the world to go to Paradise Garage [the famous SoHo all-night discotheque].

“You know, today’s generation, they just wear clothes instinctively, and with my collections, it doesn’t matter how you identify—it’s not about being elitist or aspirational,” she says. “I really don’t like that word, actually: aspirational. I prefer inspirational, because aspirational is when you’re trying to be something to be accepted. Inspirational is when you’re taking what I make and going away on your own and using it to express yourself.
