The House Judiciary Committee advanced sweeping gun control legislation Thursday in the wake of high-profile mass shootings in New York, Texas, and Oklahoma.

The Protect Our Kids Act was passed along party lines, with 25 Democrats voting in favor and all 19 Republicans opposed. The legislation is expected to reach the House floor next week, and if it passes, faces a much tougher battleground in the Senate.“Today, the House Judiciary Committee took the first, but hopefully not the last, step towards enacting commonsense gun violence prevention legislation,” Chairman Jerrold Nadler said.

Republicans accused Democrats of making a partisan power grab while ignoring reforms they believe are a higher priority to stop violence.
