The House Republican Conference on Thursday deleted a tweet taking aim at Jan. 6 select committee witness Sarah Matthews after receiving backlash on social media over its decision to go after the Republican staffer.
During the course of the prime-time hearing, the House Republican Conference, led by vocal Trump ally Rep. Elise Stefanik , took to social media in an effort to delegitimize Matthews, who was previously deputy White House press secretary and resigned hours after the siege on the Capitol.
“Hey geniuses, you realize this gives @SarahAMatthews1 more credibility? She’s there because she wanted to serve Trump. She believed in him like millions Americans. On 1/6 he let her & our entire country down,” former White House Communications Director Alyssa Farah Griffin tweeted.

Trump was “the only person in the world who could call off the mob,” but he refused to do so for several hours, said the committee’s chairman, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, who participated in the hearing remotely due to a COVID-19 diagnosis.
