It is widely expected the council will once again table the vote for a week, giving Pappas more time to press his case.
Councilmembers Abbie Kamin and Robert Gallegos tagged the contract, delaying the vote for the second consecutive week. The council ‘tags’ can be used only once on a single agenda item, but Kamin and Gallegos were absent last week, which preserved their ability to use the maneuver. The body did not discuss the contract any further on Wednesday.to a competing company, Areas, a subsidiary of the Spanish concessions company Areas SAU.
Pappas, which has managed Hobby’s food and beverage scene since 2002, has waged a public campaign to renew its contract instead, emphasizing its local roots and questioning the procurement process that gave Areas the nod. Mayor Sylvester Turner’s office has accused the company of running a “smear campaign” about City Hall’s practices. He told CEO Chris Pappas on Tuesday that “this is a competitive process, not an entitlement deal.”Pappas currently has several of its brands in the airport. It leads a group called 4 Families of Hobby that bid to continue its presence there for the next decade.
