How a Richardson ISD junior high got more low-income students into advanced classes | Opinion
A principal noticed students from one school were not enrolling in advanced classes, and she did something about it.Dallas Morning News EditorialFarrah Smock, principal at Richardson ISD’s Parkhill Junior High in Dallas, noticed something amiss last spring semester when rising seventh graders began signing up for advanced classes for the 2022-23 school year. Most of the students came from three of the four elementary schools that feed into Parkhill.
This underrepresentation prompted Smock and her staff to come up with a plan. What they did can teach the rest of us a thing or two about how to boost low-income students and better position them for success in high school and beyond. After meeting with the RISD Academy counselors, Parkhill staff members met with each student. They gave the students a certificate that said they had been selected to take an advanced class in a particular subject and listed three reasons that were tailored for each student — for example, that a student is a great creative writer.“When I was in Zoom with two elementary counselors, they said, use the word ‘selected,’” Smock told us.
Advanced classes at Parkhill are open to all students, but they are more rigorous than regular courses. Taking those classes in middle school can give students the foundation they need for advanced classes in high school that can earn them college credit.
