While their three starters remained stuck in Denver, Bones Hyland was electric and at the center of one of the Nuggets' more improbable wins of the last few seasons.
It wasn’t a malicious shot, according to coach Michael Malone, but it was a shot born of Hyland’s outsized confidence. After Friday’s drubbing, which came while Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon remained in Denver due to various illnesses, the Nuggets used Saturday as an optional shooting day to work on player development.
Hyland watched and re-watched as he forced his way into an inefficient shooting night. The second-year guard was only 5 of 16 for 17 points in a game where the Nuggets couldn’t afford any margin for error. “He was carrying us offensively,” Malone said after the Nuggets survived 98-97 against Dallas, which made the Western Conference Finals last season.
