I was still getting used to these enforced breaks from my reason for living. It had been a month since my son’s first overnight with his dad, maybe two since my ex left us – and on those nights I had to resort to meeting friends to hammer Prosecco or watch feel-good feminist movies in order to feel… anything.I found out a month later was that my ex was in the blissful throes of a new relationship and I had become the butt of a particularly dignity-shredding joke.
I can’t tell you what I did last Valentine’s Day. A cursory check through my phone informs me I took a load of selfies with my then one-year-old son, who was more interested in chewing a wooden hammer than posing, but I seem to have blocked the day from my memory and probably for good reason.This year however, I’ll be celebrating my single parent status on a day that hits me and my fellow single parents hard.
This dinner of randomly assembled women from all walks of life quickly became like a group therapy session where we all shared our stories over large glasses of wine and cried. There was no shame, no judgement, no one-upmanship – just plenty of nods, applause, laughter and hugs. I finally began to feel part of something again; something bigger than a couple: a family, a tribe, a movement.
