No sooner had the back door shut than flames and embers shot over the house. The power went out. Everything went dark. Smoke seeped through the vents. MORE ⬇️

It has been 10 years since 19 members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots died in the Yarnell Hill Fire.

Late that afternoon, D.J. stepped outside the house to go to the barn. It was about 4:30 p.m. She noticed the wind had shifted and increased, blowing the fire toward the 60-acre ranch. She saw a rolling mass of orange flames and black smoke.Lee told her they needed to get the animals inside the barn. They scrambled to get horses, goats, donkeys, and a llama. Once they coaxed the animals inside, they headed to the house.Lee was confident they would be OK.

A hotshot team from Prescott – the Granite Mountain Interagency Hotshot Crew – had been working nearby, on the other side of a mountain ridge, unbeknownst to D.J. and Lee. “I’m here with Granite Mountain Hotshots, our escape route has been cut off. We are preparing a deployment site and we are burning out around ourselves in the brush and I’ll give you a call when we are under the sh— the shelters.”An Arizona Department of Safety helicopter spotted the shelters shortly after 6 p.m.
