Simine Vazire, a leader in psychology’s open science movement, talks about her plans to fight fraud and champion rigor in Psychological Science

Simine Vazire, a leader in psychology’s open science movement, talks about her plans to fight fraud and champion rigor inThe trustworthiness of behavioral science has come under renewed scrutiny following recent high-profile retractions for alleged research fraud.

Q: You were not the only well-known science reform advocate to apply for this role, and this is not the first time you’ve applied for it yourself. Why is this position so important to the reform movement?] controls a lot of incentives. Getting a paper into a journal can affect your chances of getting a grant, getting a job, getting an award. So even small changes in the incentives and reward structure at journals have a really big impact.

Another thing that journals can do is encourage either internal or third-party checks—maybe random checks or end-of-year audits. I have discussions in the works with groups that may check whether we can reproduce the results in the papers from the data and code that the authors provide. I think by making that a routine thing, so that authors, reviewers, and editors know that this might happen on a paper, maybe they’d be a little bit more careful..

In terms of diversity, I think there’s a lot more we can do structurally. For example, one thing I plan to do is hold open online office hours for anyone who wants to ask questions about how the publishing process works, because there’s a lot of “hidden curriculum.” I think demystifying how publication works could go a long way toward bringing in authors and reviewers who haven’t been included in the past.
