Some of the creators we spoke to reflect their AAPI identity explicitly in their work, depicting scenes from their heritage in drawings. Others represent their culture simply by being an Asian-American artist.

“At the time I had stayed away from gel polish because I was under the assumption that it was unhealthy and damaging to nails. Then, I got my nails done at a Japanese salon called; it was the first time I was introduced to high quality Japanese potted gels that could keep your nails strong and healthy,” she said.

"Whenever I work with someone I definitely feel empowered and determined to help them have their vision come to life.”“[My identity is present in my work], but in ways that aren't entirely visible. Growing up, I was always taught that our efforts are part of a whole — that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. And so, even though a specific piece I tattoo might not necessarily be Asian inspired, the hands I use are of my mother's and the eyes I use are of my father's.

“In my work, I think often about expressions of love and care, especially in the contexts of our upbringing and the cultures and family dynamics that shape our paradigms,” she said. “So while I am thinking generally about the experience of giving and receiving love, for me those experiences will always be rooted in growing up in a Chinese-American immigrant family.”“I believe that one’s craft always provides a sense of comfort and safety.
