Find out how to explore Paris' La Petite Ceinture (meaning the little belt), a railway line which carried people around Paris by steam train from 1852 to 1934.

. The first was to link existing railway stations in Paris onto one combined circular track to transport goods; horse and cart journeys were no longer viable for the growing population. The city had also recently undergone massive fortification in case of attack and France’s strategic command needed a way to move arms across the city. The third reason was economic–it was a good way to provide jobs for the unemployed masses....

The railway fell into decline after the Metropolitain started to be built at the turn of the 20th century. By 1913, numbers had fallen to 14 million and by 1927, only 7 million people were using it.The line is accessible from many of Paris’–the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th. Easy access is at the Villa du Bel Air near Porte de Vincennes.and open to the public, with playgrounds and communal gardens along the line.
