The muffuletta is the quintessential French Quarter sandwich.
Created by Italian immigrants who came from Sicily to New Orleans, it tells a story of the American dream, but in a very delicious way. I love all the layers of cured meats, provolone cheese and the bright flavors of the pickled giardiniera vegetables as well as the briny undertones of a chopped olive salad. The light as air sesame bread is there to catch all the juices and flavors from leaving the muffuletta's hammy grips.
Giardinera, dried Sicilian oregano, pepperoncini, Castelvetrano olives and piquillo peppers can be purchased from a grocery store, specialty Italian store or online. A large 1- to 2-pound sesame loaf can be used instead of a muffuletta roll.Combine all ingredients and place into a food processor. Lightly pulse until just combined but still very chunky .Spread 4 tablespoons olive oil on both cut sides of the muffuletta roll .
