The city has contracted with Tomahawk Strategic Solutions for simulations of active shooter scenarios.
If the unthinkable report of an active shooter comes across the radio, police say it’s training — actual experience repeated over and over for years ahead of time — that makes the difference.
Jersey City recently approved two contracts with Tomahawk worth a combined $135,000, including a simulated shooter situation at the Jackson Square municipal complex last weekend. Hudson County paid Tomahawk $45,000 for SWAT team training. The exercise lasted about 30 minutes, but the final confrontation happened in a flash: Actors ran into an office space on the second floor and fell to the ground, screaming and pretending to be injured. The “shooter” came in afterward carrying a handgun, followed quickly by two police officers.
Tomahawk has been Jersey City’s provider for this training since 2015, and now runs three or four simulations per year for the city. After each session, the company offers feedback based on what its trainers observed.
