How to stop a dog from digging under a fence and escaping the yard
Dogs may dig out of habit or boredom, to stay cool, to hide food or a toy, or instinctively because of their breed. While it can be difficult to stop, it’s possible.I have a 2-year-old keeshond, who is a sweet and loving dog. I can’t always be home all day, so sometimes I leave him in the backyard so he can enjoy the outdoors. But he likes to dig holes in the yard and has escaped under the fence in the past.
I want my dog to be able to spend time outside. What can I do to keep him from digging out in the future?Dogs may dig out of habit or boredom, to stay cool, to hide food or a toy, or instinctively because of their breed. While it can be difficult to stop, it’s possible, so here are some suggestions. Always supervise your dog when he is outside. Bored dogs dig, and nothing bores a dog faster than being alone. If your dog barks at everything, interrupting Zoom meetings, work calls, here's how to fix thatNext, introduce him to toys that are only for the yard or games that you only play with him outside. You can say, “go play,” when you give him a toy or start an activity, and then give him a treat when he engages you.
If you still can’t stop his digging, a different approach might be to redirect it. Designate a location in the yard just for digging, like a doggie sandbox. Hide treats so they peek out a little from the sand. When your dog digs at the sand to retrieve the treat, reward him with a treat from your hand, so he learns it’s okay to dig in this location.
