It's the dawn of an era for Mardi Gras: Meet the woman changing a holiday traditionally dominated by rich, white men.

Most people use the phrase “rain on your parade” as a metaphor. For New Orleanians, this threat is a very literal one, especially during. The 1,100 riders of the 2020 Muses parade, one of the most anticipated and beloved of the carnival season, know this all too well. Their all-female parade, which takes a full year to organize, build, and execute, was cancelled Thursday due to thunderstorms and high winds.

We can thank the Muses waitlist for the Nyx parade: With 1,500 members, it’s now the largest female krewe in New Orleans. Muses also spawned a proliferation of size-positive, female dance troupes like the Pussyfooters and Bearded Oysters, which have offered a more affordable form of participation, since dance troupes don’t have to pay to parade in the same way krewes do.

Alyssa Olson is one of only three female painters at Kern Studios, an influential company that builds floats for parades. This year, she helped paint most of the Muses’ “2020 Vision”-themed floats. Stand-outs included one called “Reading Tea Leaves,” with a portrait of Boris Johnson drinking “English Brexit Tea,” and another dedicated to the local weather woman Margaret Orr called “Margaret Orr-acle of Da Sky.
