A Hudson doctor and a pharmaceutical company employee pleaded guilty Monday to carrying out a kickback scheme in which the doctor prescribed medication to patients who didn’t need it in exchange for cash and lavish dinners.
AKRON, Ohio — and former Avanir Pharmaceuticals employee Frank Mazzucco admitted to their roles in the scheme on Monday, the day their trial in Akron federal court was set to begin.
Raheja is expected to be sentenced to 30 months in prison during a Feb. 3 hearing in front of U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi. He agreed to surrender his medical license within 60 days, ending his career that began in 1993. Raheja most recently practiced in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. Prosecutors dropped dozens of charges against the two men as part of the plea agreement, which came after a flurry of recent activity in the case.
Mazzucco, of Dublin, and one of his former employees, Gregory Hayslette of Aurora, organized and approved the speaker series and the kickbacks for Raheja, which included expensive dinners at Raheja’s preferred restaurant — Chez Francois in Vermilion.
