A Papua New Guinea resident told AP that a 7.6 earthquake that struck the Pacific island nation caused cups and plates to crash from shelves at his house, and may have broken pipes. But the extent of damage to surrounding communities remains unclear.
Debris lies strewn across the floor in the kitchen of Renagi Ravu's house in Kainantu, following a strong earthquake in northeastern Papua New Guinea, Sunday Sept. 11, 2022. The U.S. Geological Survey has detected a 7.6-magnitude earthquake in northeastern Papua New Guinea.
Ravu tried to stand up from his chair but couldn’t maintain his balance and ended up in a kind of group hug with his colleagues, while plates and cups crashed from his shelves to the ground. His children, ages 9 and 2, had their drinks and breakfast spill over.
