The national organization's failure to protect children from sexual abuse and increasing politicization have damaged the program that changed my life beyond repair.
I am an Eagle Scout. Scouting very much changed my life. During the 1960s, I hiked and camped in summer and winter and ultimately achieved the highest rank available in the program, an accomplishment that reflected positively on my troop and leaders and gave me a certain cachet.
Many of my scout leaders were seasoned World War II and Korean War veterans. They taught us to speak up for others, as well as ourselves. My patrol looked forward to our annual big trip away from home. One year, we hiked throughout New York state to Niagara Falls and Canada. Another summer, we visited the beach. It was the first time many of us had seen the ocean.
Perhaps the biggest lessons I learned came straight from the founder of the Boy Scouts movement, Robert Baden-Powell, who once said,"In scouting, a boy is encouraged to educate himself instead of being instructed." He also said,"We must change boys from a 'what can I get' to a 'what can I give' attitude." Personal responsibility and service to others were ingrained in every successful scout.
."We were taught that if a church leader does something wrong, you're supposed to follow them anyway and that God would take care of it."

Boy Scouts Leadership Confident Organization Can Overcome Stigma Of BankruptcyIRVING, TX—Stressing that the century-old youth organization wasn’t going anywhere despite its recent Chapter 11 filing, Boy Scouts of America CEO Roger Mosby told reporters Tuesday he was confident the group could overcome the devastating stigma of bankruptcy. “On behalf of the BSA’s leadership, I wish to assure our scouting families I will not let the unfortunate choices of a few individuals tarnish the good name of this institution by forever associating it with an inability to meet our most basic financial obligations,” said Mosby, adding that so long as he was in charge, the Boy Scouts would fight to regain the public’s trust and show it would never again fall victim to predatory lenders. “To all our members affected by the unspeakable tragedy of this debt restructuring, I apologize. But I promise you this court filing will not erase the Boy Scouts’ proud legacy of solvency.” Mosby also announced a new initiative designed to educate both Scouts and Scout leaders about how to report anyone they think might be engaging in questionable lending behaviors with the organization.
