It's been over 15 years since the original I Am Legend, but the sequel is right to have waited so long, due to The Walking Dead's presence.
I Am Legend 2 has been a long time coming, but it needed to wait until now to really have the chance to succeed, due to the presence of AMC's The Walking Dead from 2010-22. Starring Will Smith as Robert Neville, I Am Legend was released in December 2007 to incredible financial success at the box office, grossing over half a billion dollars during its theatrical run.

Jordan , will pick up following I Am Legend's alternate ending, which was first available on the film's DVD. I Am Legend's theatrical ending sees Robert Neville sacrifice himself by blowing up his lab, which was under siege by Darkseekers at the time so that two fellow humans could escape.
The original I Am Legend was released just before the boom of zombie movies released in the wake of The Walking Dead, such as World War Z and Warm Bodies. If the sequel had not waited over a decade and a half to release, then it would have come out in a far more saturated market. Thus, if I Am Legend 2 had gone underway while The Walking Dead was still airing there's every likelihood the sequel could have struggled.
How I Am Legend 2 Can Succeed Despite TWD Spin-Offs The Walking Dead may have finally ended its run on AMC, after 11 seasons on the network, but that does not mean the show's universe is over. While spinoff Fear the Walking Dead will end its run in 2023, before I Am Legend 2's release, there are a number of The Walking Dead miniseries in the works. However, the major selling point of these shows is seeing fan-favorite characters' ongoing adventures.
