A bill that would open teachers and school librarians to criminal prosecution over the content of books and other educational materials was passed by the Indiana Senate Tuesday.
removes a legal defense K-12 schools may use against charges of distributing “harmful material” to minors. It also creates a new process for parents to request the removal of books they find inappropriate from school libraries.
Each year, conservative groups such as Purple for Parents have come to the legislature armed with passages they find objectionable that, they say, are available in school libraries around the state. Opponents, though, say schools already have processes in place for parents to bring local challenges to books they find inappropriate. SB 12 codifies such a process, setting up committees of local administrators to review such challenges.
