The National Weather Service celebrates its 150th anniversary today. Does the public really understand its contributions to weather forecasts?
This all started when I posted something on my Facebook page pushing back on a friend’s comment that there was little warning about severe weather threats in Atlanta Thursday.
. My wife, Ayana Shepherd, is a pretty “straight to the point” type of person. Her comments below were something of a wake-up call: The reality is that people interpret information differently. I always caution weather professionals about these types of things. I saw a few colleagues and weather friends posting about our Winter Weather Advisory but without context. Without such context as provided by the National Weather Service graphic below, many people have no idea what an Advisory means in terms of snow totals. By the way, the snow pretty much ended right around the time that the National Weather Service advisory stated.
Our TV partners and private companies provide the broader dissemination mechanisms and interpretations that are meaningful to the public, clients, or stakeholders. Most of my colleagues on television are degreed meteorologists or have significant training in weather communication. They are critical for providing interpretations of meteorological information. However, we don’t always see them or have access to them. Increasingly, many people also consume weather information from “Apps.
