’s third concussion of the season, something had seemed off with him this month. After three months of playing by far his best football—like, MVP-level stuff—his performance fell off a cliff when the calendar flipped to December. Assuming he plays again this year, what can he do/has he done enough to right the ship?
For reference, in Tagovailoa’s first nine games, he completed nearly 70% of his pass attempts for about 285 yards per game. From September through November, he had thrown 19 passing touchdowns to just three interceptions. Since then , his completion rate is down to just over 52% as he averaged 258 yards in three and a half games with six touchdowns and two interceptions. There was a clear decline in his performance in December, particularly in his accuracy.
Accuracy, particularly on deep throws, was one of Tagovailoa’s greatest strengths earlier in the season. With Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill as a dynamic duo stretching the field, that accuracy to those two playmakers had the quarterback firmly in the conversation for MVP. Then suddenly, in the Dolphins’ Week 13 game against the 49ers in San Francisco, Tagovailoa was airmailing his passes. The 49ers were getting some pressure on him to be sure, but it was less pressure than the Houston Texans generated a week earlier and the Cleveland Browns a week before that. One week later against the Chargers in Los Angeles, it was more of the same.
