The Supreme Court on Monday weighed whether giving immigration advice risks prosecution under a law making it a crime to 'encourage and induce' illegal immigrants to stay in the U.S.
The Supreme Court weighed a case involving a decades-old statute making it a crime to"encourage or induce" illegal immigrants to stay in the U.S.
"Why should we uphold a statute that criminalizes words," she added."That's what we're doing with this statute." The Supreme Court took up an immigration law case centered on a defendant accused of defrauding noncitizens out of $1.8 million. "It is a little awkward, though, that this case comes up in a posture with Mr. Hansen, who I don’t think anybody could say he’s been chilled from speaking," Justice Neil M. Gorsuch said.
