Raquel Natalicchio/Staff photographerAt a convenience store in a scorching pocket of Sunnyside, business boomed for Jacob Lui when the latest round of extreme heat swept through the Houston region.“It’s all selling very, very fast,” said Lui, the 33-year-old store owner from Missouri City.

Lui’s store is in a heat island, an area of the city that can be several degrees hotter than others. For those like Dang who live in these hotter areas of Houston, heat waves like the one that recently blasted the region for nearly two weeks can be especially difficult to endure.

Hurst, originally from Indiana, said he worried about his history of heat-related illness; he once overheated during a football game and collapsed. Akeeme Harris, who works outdoors for Bellaire’s public works department, carries ice-cold water wherever he goes and has started using cooling towels on the job .

Climate data says Houston has gotten hotter. Just last year, the city logged 22 days of 100-plus-degree days, which was its fourth-highest annual total ever. The heat in the Houston region this summer has already been fatal.
