Southern states including Mississippi, West Virginia and Alabama had some of the lowest life expectancies in the U.S. before the pandemic, according to a new CDC report. Hawaii, California and New York were among the states with highest life expectancies.
Southern states had some of the lowest life expectancies in the country before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reflecting differing lifespans for Americans across regions.
Mississippi had the lowest life expectancy at birth in the U.S. in 2019, at 74.4 years, according to the report from National Center for Health Statistics, which is part of the CDC. That’s more than six years lower than Hawaii’s life expectancy of 80.9 years, the highest in the nation.
