The creative director said goodbye to Alexander McQueen today, leaving behind her own powerful legacy
that she would be stepping down from the helm of Alexander McQueen after 13 years as creative director and nearly three decades at the house. Since taking over for Lee Alexander McQueen after his tragic suicide in 2010, Burton has shown a deep love for and mastery of the craft of her longtime friend and collaborator, while modernizing the label and demonstrating that she is one of the most profoundly talented designers of this generation.
As written in the show notes, the collection was inspired by "female anatomy, Queen Elizabeth I, the blood red rose and Magdalena Abakanowicz, a transgressive and powerfully creative artist who refused ever to compromise her vision.” Burton also dedicated her final bow to Lee, writing that his “wish was always to empower women.” Indeed he did, and Burton thoughtfully carried on his legacy while simultaneously building a singular one for herself.
