An Indiana Senate committee moved forward a bill that will ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender children.
After several hours of emotional testimony Wednesday morning, the Senate’s health committee passed a bill that would ban gender-affirming medical care for minors.to protect vulnerable children. Opponents say the legislation interferes with parents' rights, unnecessarily involves the government into private lives and is targeting a marginalized group for political purposes.
The bill would continue to allow children to access mental health services, but it would prohibit access to any sort of gender-affirming medical or surgical treatment for transgender youth, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgery for minors under 18 years old. Representatives from the Indiana University Health system, which operates the Gender Health Clinic at Riley Children’s Hospital, said that gender-affirming surgery is not performed on minors in Indiana.
