The UTHealth collection is one of dozens of brain banks worldwide, but not all of them have such close relationships with their local coroner’s office. Many institutions around the U.S., and some in Europe, request brain samples from the Houston collection “because the tissue is so precious,” Walss-Bass said.

When Bradley spots an appropriate brain, they notify officials at the Institute of Forensic Sciences, who ask next of kin about donations. Most people decline, so it’s a special day for the researchers when a family member gives the OK.Bradley loaded the empty icebox into the back of their 2019 Honda CRV, distinguished only by a folded paper on the dashboard that reads “UTHealth Brain Collection,” when they set out for the half-mile drive to Institute of Forensic Sciences.

Bradley was not sure whether this would disqualify the brain as a contender. They would need to confer with Walss-Bass later in the day. For now, they would take it. Bradley drove the five-minute route back to the lab with a blue beach cooler. The brain, enclosed in a small white bucket, remained in the ice chest until Bradley took it out and weighed it Then they began cutting.

Bradley froze the pieces of one hemisphere in liquid nitrogen, and preserved the other in formaldehyde.
