The study, by Stanford University School of Medicine researchers, found that when kids turn 13, the sound of their mother’s voice becomes far less rewarding and intriguing than that of a stranger. That makes teens tune in more intently to what strangers say than to what their mother is conveying, according to the study, which appeared in theand was based on MRI brain scans of 46 San Francisco Bay Area children between the ages of 7 and 16.
While it may perturb parents, this change is actually healthy, the researchers note, depicting it as a step toward maturing and achieving independence. The MRI was operated while teens listened to voice recordings of their biological mother and a stranger uttering gibberish — this was so the researchers could ensure that the children were reacting to the voice, not the content.
