Former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians reflects on his longtime NFL coaching career, saying 'It's been an unbelievable ride.'
Now that he’s decided to step away from coaching after spending 28 seasons in the NFL, including successful stints as a head coach for the Cardinals and Buccaneers, Bruce Arians has a quandary in his new role as Tampa Bay’s “senior football consultant.”
“I’ve just got to figure out what the hell I’m going to do during the game,” he said. “I can’t be on the sideline because they’d be throwing flags on me left and right for cussing out the officials. I ain’t the head coach no more.” Bowles, 58, played for Arians at Temple University, where he was a four-year starter at cornerback from 1982-85. They later coached together with the Cleveland Browns and when Arians became head coach of the Cardinals in 2013, he hired Bowles as his defensive coordinator. Bowles left after two seasons in Arizona to become head coach of the Jets before reuniting with Arians in Tampa for the past three seasons.
Buccaneers owner Joel Glazer announced Thursday that Arians will be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor this upcoming season. After spending countless years as an assistant coach, it was the Cardinals who gave Arians his first job as an NFL head coach and he made sure to recognize the franchise during Thursday’s news conference.
“We had dinner that night and you stole the show,” Licht said at Thursday’s news conference. “The confidence that you exude, you already knew you had the job without even doing the interview. I picked you up in the morning to take you to the facility and you told me you were going to be the coolest coach I ever worked with – and you are.
