After a record time in Chicago Marathon, Emily Sisson is running the half in Houston with another eye on the Olympics.

59:22, set by Feyisa Lilesa, Ethiopia, in 2012Gebresilase Aleme, Ethiopia, 59:18; Mohamed El Aaraby, Morocco, 59:441:04:51, set by Joyciline Jepkosgei, Kenya, 20172023 runners with fastest personal bests:Emily Sisson 1:07:11 While, true, she finished almost four minutes behind the winner, Ruth Chepng’etich, the Kenyan had clocked an outstanding 2:14:18, the second-fastest women’s time in history and a mere 14 seconds off the world record. Yes, very fast company.

“Houston is a good stepping stone, a good tuneup,” said Sisson, who was more of a face in the crowd rather than a star attraction in her only previous appearance in Houston in 2019, when, smiling, she recalled “I finished 30-something” in the half.“I came off Chicago feeling pretty good, just glad to be getting back into it,” she said. “Originally, I signed up for Chicago hoping to have a good run, but I was kind of struggling over the summer, so I guess I surprised myself a little.

Since leaving Providence, where she won a pair of major Big East titles, she has placed ninth in the 10,000 meters at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, come in sixth in the 2019 London Marathon — her debut at 26.2 miles — and narrowly missed breaking Molly Huddle’s then-American record of 1:07:26 at the Valencia Half-Marathon in late 2020.

“Women’s distance running is taking off right now, and there are a lot of American women capable of running very fast times,” Sisson said. “Sometimes, it can be a timing thing.”
