This weekend marks your last chance to get the seasonal French-inspired, Chicago-style galette des rois at Floriole Bakery & Cafe this year.
galette des rois, the feast day observed 12 days after Christmas on Jan. 6. In France, it’s typically available at bakeries and grocery stores until the end of the month. The pastry is different, but related to the colorful king cake seen around Mardi Gras.
Both hide a fève or small favor baked into the cake. Originally it was just a dried bean. Now you can find coveted, collectible, teeny tiny treasures. At Floriole in the Lincoln Park neighborhood you might find a handmade porcelain croissant by artist Michael Bridges made at Lillstreet Art Center. My pro tip: Order a whole galette, slice it up and drop it off to friends, each with an extra fève, which you can buy while supplies last.
