Transitioning isn’t easy, but here’s how I did it.
Toward the end of my college career, “going natural” had become a thing. Everywhere I turned, women of color were renouncing their love for relaxers and embracing their natural coils and kinks. At the time, I couldn’t bare the thought of having to go without a relaxer, but within a few short years, I had changed my mind and decided that I would give the natural thing a try.for the first time.
About two months into my transition period, my journey to natural was totally derailed during a lunch date with my then-boyfriend’s mom. I hadn’t done any research on how to transition, so I was still using all of the products I had been using on my straight hair for years. On top of that, I was using my flatiron almost everyday in an attempt to make my kinky roots look straight.
At lunch, she kept looking at my hair. I told her that I was in the transition period and she sweetly responded, “You usually have your hair done nicely, so I figured something was going on.” Although I knew she meant no harm by her comment, it made me think going natural was not for me. That following weekend, I had my friend relax my hair.
My second attempt at going natural was a little different. After going through a breakup and depression, I did what many women do—changed something about my hair. In February 2015, I went into the salon with relaxed, shoulder-length hair and came out with a pixie cut. My stylist convinced me to start the transition period again. He told me that he’d only relax the sides of my short cut , but keep the top natural. He cut my hair so perfectly that I was willing to try whatever he suggested.
My cousin was the first person I told that I was considering growing my hair back out natural. Her response was unreal. “Natural? You don’t have good enough hair to try to go natural,” she told me. Aside from being surprised at her response, it made me a little upset. What makes people think it’s OK to use the term “good hair”? What is “good hair” anyway? Is straight hair “good hair”? Or big bouncy curls? “Good hair” to me is healthy hair. It’s what you make it.
